Looking for a dog-friendly Dana Point getaway? If you’ve been avoiding Dana Point because you’ve heard the harbor is under construction or because dogs aren’t allowed on the beaches, don’t cross it off your list just yet.
Located along the Orange County coast about halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, Dana Point makes an easy weekend road trip for Southern California dog owners. Better yet, you don’t have to stay at a luxury resort to enjoy everything this beautiful coastal town has to offer.
Cooper and I have visited Dana Point twice this summer while spending time with my best friend who lives nearby. Even with the harbor revitalization project underway, we found plenty to enjoy together without breaking the bank. From scenic harbor walks and ocean-view parks to affordable hotels, dog-friendly patios, and local restaurants, Dana Point is still one of my favorite Southern California weekend escapes.
Where to Stay in Dog-Friendly Dana Point on a Budget
Dana Point is home to several beautiful luxury resorts, but if you’re like me, you’d rather spend your money on great restaurants, local experiences, and maybe an extra night by the coast than on an expensive hotel room. Fortunately, there are a couple of comfortable, dog-friendly hotels that won’t break the bank while still putting you close to everything Dana Point has to offer.
Dana Point Marina Inn
For both of our recent visits, Cooper and I stayed at the Dana Point Marina Inn, and it continues to be my favorite place to stay in Dana Point.
The hotel is expected to be replaced as part of the Dana Point Harbor redevelopment project, although no closure date has been announced. Until then, it’s hard to beat the location. Sitting right on the harbor, it’s an easy walk to restaurants, shops, waterfront paths, and many of the places you’ll want to explore during your stay.
The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, although they are a little dated. Cooper loved watching people and other dogs stroll by before we headed out for our evening walks. While the dĂ©cor isn’t fancy, it’s one of the best values you’ll find this close to the harbor.
The hotel also offers complimentary breakfast, an outdoor pool, $15 overnight parking, and a dog fee of just $20 per night with a refundable $50 deposit.
Best Western Plus Marina Shores Inn
Once the Dana Marina Inn eventually closes, the Best Western Plus Marina Shores Inn will likely become my new home base.
I’ve stayed here before and found it to be another excellent value for budget-conscious travelers. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and larger than many hotel rooms in the area. I especially like the location. It’s within walking distance of Dana Point Harbor, Doheny State Beach, and several restaurants, making it easy to leave the truck parked while exploring.
The hotel offers complimentary breakfast, a pool, suite options, $25 overnight parking, and a pet fee of $40 per night with a refundable $150 deposit. If you’re looking for an affordable place to stay without sacrificing convenience, this is another great choice.

Dog-Friendly Dana Point Harbor Walks
One of my favorite things to do in Dana Point is simply wander around the harbor.
Each evening, Cooper happily rode in his stroller while we admired everything from fishing boats to luxury yachts. The paved waterfront paths make it easy to explore at your own pace, whether you’re walking your dog or just enjoying the ocean breeze.
One spot you shouldn’t miss is crossing the bridge to the grassy area overlooking the breakwater. With benches, picnic tables, and restrooms, it’s the perfect place to sit for a while and watch the boats come and go.
From there, you can continue toward the Dana Point Yacht Club overlooking Baby Beach or head the opposite direction toward Wind & Sea Restaurant.
One of my favorite parts of our evening walks was meeting other dog owners. Every night seemed to bring new conversations, wagging tails, and friendly faces, making the harbor feel like a community gathering place.
Dog-Friendly Dana Point Parks
Although dogs aren’t allowed on Dana Point’s beaches, there are still plenty of beautiful places where you can enjoy the ocean together.
Salt Creek Park
If I had to choose one favorite spot in Dana Point, this would be it.
Perched high above Salt Creek Beach, the park offers incredible panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. During our last visit, I picked up lunch, spread out under a shady tree with a good book, and spent a relaxing afternoon while Cooper alternated between sunbathing and napping beside me.
It was one of those perfect travel moments where doing absolutely nothing felt like the best part of the day.
The park features expansive lawns, picnic tables, walking paths, affordable parking for just $1 an hour, and nearby restrooms.
Strands Vista Park
Another favorite is the grassy bluff overlooking Strands Beach.
It’s smaller than Salt Creek Park but offers equally beautiful ocean views, benches, and free parking. It’s an ideal stop to stretch your legs, enjoy the scenery, or watch the sunset before dinner.
Heritage Park
Located just off Del Prado Avenue, Heritage Park overlooks Dana Point Harbor and includes a small fenced dog park where your pup can run off leash.
If you’re feeling energetic, take the staircase that connects the park to the harbor below. The views are well worth the extra steps.
Dog-Friendly Dana Point Restaurants
Dana Point has no shortage of restaurants with dog-friendly patios, making it easy to bring your pup along for a meal.
One of my favorites is Coastal Kitchen, where I highly recommend ordering the smoked trout dip. It’s become my must-have appetizer every time I visit.
Another great choice is Craft House. The menu features creative American cuisine, and the spacious patio is perfect for dining with your dog.
On this trip, I also discovered Homeslice. While Truly Pizza often has a wait, Homeslice offered a more relaxed atmosphere and one of the best mushroom pizzas I’ve had in a long time. It’s definitely worth adding to your weekend itinerary.
Exploring Dog-Friendly Dana Point Along Del Prado
No visit to Dana Point feels complete without spending time on Del Prado Avenue. This charming downtown street is lined with locally owned boutiques, restaurants, wine bars, coffee shops, and plenty of dog-friendly patios.
One of the things I love most about Del Prado is that you don’t need a plan. Wander into a few shops, stop for lunch, grab a glass of wine, and simply enjoy the laid-back coastal vibe. Cooper received plenty of smiles and attention along the way, making it just as enjoyable for him as it was for me.
A Fun Stop at The Wine Experience
One of my favorite discoveries on Del Prado was The Wine Experience.
Instead of ordering a traditional wine flight, you load money onto a tasting card and use it at the self-serve wine dispensers. You can choose a 1-ounce taste, a 3-ounce pour, or a full glass, making it easy to sample wines you might never have tried otherwise.
They also offer customizable charcuterie boards. You can build your own or let their in-house cheese expert create one for you. Flatbreads, desserts, and other light bites round out the menu, and dogs are welcome on the outdoor patio.
Pack a Picnic from Tutor & Spunky’s Deli
If you’re planning to spend a few hours relaxing at Salt Creek Park, make a stop at Tutor & Spunky’s Deli first.
Their sandwiches are huge, fresh, and perfect for a picnic overlooking the ocean. My personal favorite is the tuna sandwich on homemade squaw bread.
Trust me. You won’t leave hungry.
Breakfast at Coffee Importers
Before heading home, stop by Coffee Importers inside Dana Point Harbor.
Their coffee drinks and breakfast sandwiches are delicious, but my favorite part isn’t the menu. I recommend ordering your breakfast to go, then walking past the Ocean Institute to the bluff overlooking the ocean.
With benches, picnic tables, and panoramic views of the Pacific, it’s one of my favorite places to enjoy a slow morning. Sitting there with breakfast while Cooper relaxed beside me was the perfect way to end our weekend.
Why I Love Dog-Friendly Dana Point
I’ve heard people say they’re waiting to visit Dana Point until the harbor renovation is complete. After spending two weekends here with Cooper, I don’t think there’s any reason to wait.
Yes, construction is happening, and yes, dogs aren’t allowed on the beaches. But that didn’t stop us from having an incredible time.
Some of my favorite memories weren’t tied to a specific attraction. They were the simple moments: strolling the harbor at sunset, relaxing beneath a tree at Salt Creek Park, discovering a new favorite restaurant, wandering the shops along Del Prado, and enjoying breakfast with an ocean view before heading home.
That’s what Dana Point does so well. It invites you to slow down.

Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, I think you’ll discover, just like Cooper and I did, that some of the best travel memories come from simply taking your time and enjoying where you are.
