In the sleepy surfer town of Leucadia is the best brunch in San Diego. How do I know? Because it is my go-to spot whenever I am in the area. Why should you go? Because Atelier Manna serves some of the most mouthwatering and inspiring plates of food I have ever had.
Atelier Manna: What to Expect
If you are not looking for it, you might pass it by. Atelier Manna is housed in a small, unassuming building that was previously a deli. Two patios flank the kitchen. To the right, you will find decorative tables and chairs under shade covers. On the left is a long community table. Because all seating is outside, dogs are welcome.
The definition of an atelier is a workshop or studio, especially one used by an artist or designer. While I would definitely call the food a work of art, the eatery itself is just as creative. The owners commissioned local artists to construct a one-of-a-kind space. The centerpiece is a 10-foot mural by Rory Morrison. Reclaimed steel cutouts, personal Knick-knacks and greenery lend to an inviting and intriguing environment.
Insider’s tip: Atelier Manna does not take reservations but does have an online waitlist. Do yourself a favor and put your name on the list. Wait times can easily be over an hour.
Best Brunch in San Diego: The Menu
The menu at Atelier Manna changes frequently due to the seasonal availability of local produce. Every item is a unique blend of flavors and textures, beautifully presented. Inspired by the Blue Zones, regions known for longevity, dishes focus on using whole and unprocessed foods. The intent is for food to heal.
I have had the pleasure of savoring many of their offerings. My hands down favorite is the Turkish Eggs. I cannot get enough of the herbed yogurt, torn herbs, and chili-garlic butter with softly poached eggs. It is served with crusty bread meant to be used as a utensil.
I also love the “Torrija.” This Spanish-style French toast is made with country sourdough. I enjoyed it accompanied by strawberry custard, toasted coconut, lemon verbena, and Chantilly. It satisfies the sweet tooth.
Another winner is their Anchovy Toast. Layers of anchovies, heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, and herbs sit atop a ranch spread on toasted bread. A drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper adds the perfect amount of seasoning.
You don’t want to skip the Greek Yogurt Panna Cotta if available. Light and creamy, it is a visual masterpiece.
The best brunch in San Diego wouldn’t be complete without drinks. Instead of bottomless mimosas, the beverage program focuses on spirit-free alternatives. Vitality tonics and wellness shots are made using local produce. An example is the Fern, a delicious concoction of passion fruit, matcha, and fig leaf sprinkled with macadamia.
