As part of my continuing series on my trip to Australia, I’m excited to share highlights from my unforgettable Blue Mountains Australia trip. Nestled just a couple of hours west of Sydney, the Blue Mountains are a breathtaking escape into nature, history, and charming towns. If you missed the last post, you can catch up here: Flight to Australia: Brutal Truths and Survival Tips. From scenic hikes to stunning lookouts and peaceful mountain towns, this part of the journey was one of the most beautiful.

A Quick History of the Blue Mountains, Australia
Before diving into my adventures, a quick history lesson. The Blue Mountains region has been home to the Gundungurra and Darug peoples for thousands of years. European explorers first crossed the mountains in the early 1800s, opening the way for settlement and tourism. The name “Blue Mountains” comes from the bluish haze created by eucalyptus oil released into the air, which gives the area its signature look.

Hiking to Wentworth Falls on My Blue Mountains Australia Trip
One of the highlights of my Blue Mountains Australia trip was the hike to Wentworth Falls. I started the morning with a short but rewarding trail from the main parking lot to Fletcher’s Lookout, about 0.6 miles round trip. The trails are well marked, and you can even hike all the way to Scenic World from here (more on that later).
Along the way, I stopped at Jamison Lookout, which offers sweeping views over the valley, and the Wentworth Falls Lookout, where the falls come into dramatic view. The path to Fletcher’s included a few steps and some mud thanks to recent rain, but overall, it wasn’t too steep and was easy to manage.
If you have more time, continue the loop to Queen’s Cascades and Weeping Rock for even more beautiful sights. With fresh mountain air, the sound of waterfalls, and scenic views at every turn, this hike is absolutely worth it. Just bring sturdy shoes.
Charming Leura: Breakfast and Boutique Shops
After my hike to Wentworth Falls, I visited the nearby town of Leura. It’s a small and incredibly charming village filled with boutique shops and cozy restaurants. I had breakfast at The Sparrow and ordered the waffle with bacon. The thick, fluffy waffle came with maple syrup and crispy bacon, creating the perfect balance of sweet and salty.
Unsweetened iced tea is hard to come by in Sydney, so I went with a Coke — which, like most beverages here, comes without ice unless you ask. I grabbed a warm peppermint tea to stroll around town and explore the eclectic mix of shops. Leura is quaint and inviting, a perfect place to unwind after a morning of hiking.

Fun and Views at Scenic World in the Blue Mountains
No visit to the Blue Mountains is complete without stopping at Scenic World. I rode the Scenic Railway, the steepest passenger train in the world, descending into a cool, shaded rainforest filled with educational signs about local flora. After walking the peaceful boardwalk, I took the cable car back to the World Top Station, where I enjoyed a cozy café and picked up a few souvenirs.
Next, I glided across the valley on the Skyway, taking in stunning aerial views of Katoomba Falls and the iconic Three Sisters. From there, I hiked to Echo Point Lookout and back to the falls. Cockatoos were everywhere — loud, playful, and fun to watch, even if locals call them a nuisance. The trails were mostly moderate, with plenty of stairs, a great way to work out the legs while enjoying incredible views.
I loved the blend of adventure and calm at Scenic World. It’s an absolute must if you’re exploring the Blue Mountains.
Katoomba and Dining at Aunty Ed’s on the Blue Mountains Australia Trip
After Scenic World, I ended up in Katoomba — a town similar to Leura but a little bigger and busier, with a fun and artsy vibe. Lunch was at Aunty Ed’s Restaurant and Bar, a funky spot that feels like a step back in time. Think rotary phones, spoon collections, record albums, and tassel-covered lampshades. I honestly felt like I had stepped onto the set of The Brady Bunch in the best way possible.
The menu features burgers, sandwiches, and creative cocktails like mulled wine and spiced cider. They also have live music on select nights, adding to the laidback charm. As the rain started to fall, I made my way back for a cozy hotel nap — the perfect way to rest after a full day of exploring.

Dinner with a View: Jamison Views Restaurant Experience
In the evening, I treated myself to dinner at Jamison Views Restaurant, located inside the historic Mountain Heritage Hotel. This grand guesthouse dates back to the early 1900s and was once a popular summer retreat for Sydney residents looking to escape the heat.
I started with a visit to the California Bar, which has a storied past as a favorite hangout for artists, writers, and travelers. I enjoyed a dirty martini and their “chips” — thick, golden fried potatoes similar to wedge fries back home — while watching the sun set over the cliffs of the Jamison Valley.
Dinner began with a comforting cauliflower soup served as a complimentary starter. I splurged on wagyu beef — a rich and satisfying choice for someone who usually sticks to seafood — and finished with a decadent chocolate dessert. The setting, the views, and the food all made for an unforgettable dining experience.
