I bet you didn’t even know that Yogi goats existed. Well, they do! Read on to find out more about the Yogi Goats, and how you can go on a Yogi Goat hike with them.

What is the Yogi Goat Hike?
The Yogi Goat Hike is a unique experience on Airbnb called “Let’s Goat Hike”. It is exactly what it sounds like – a guided hike with Nubian goats through the beautiful Mojave desert surrounded by granite boulders, Joshua trees and desert flora. It is one of the most peaceful and enlightening hikes I have ever done.

What are Nubian Goats?
Nubian goats are thought to be the oldest goat breed in the world. First imported to England from France, they were recognized in the United States in 1913. Primarily raised as dairy goats, their milk is excellent for cheese making. Friendly and sociable animals, Nubian goats seem to thrive when interacting with humans and each other. They are docile and easy to handle, making them ideal farm pets.

Who is Your Host?
Emmanuel is the host of “Let’s Goat Hike” and keeper of the Nubian Goats and other rescued animals. He is originally from France and moved to the U.S. 20 years ago to continue working as a yoga instructor and massage therapist. He is one of the most Zen people you will ever meet! You feel his love for the animals and surrounding land immediately, and he is quick to share his knowledge of the desert, plants and goats. He is a kind and welcoming host.

Where is the Yogi Goat Hike?
The meeting spot of the hike is the Yogi Goat Farm & Retreat located on multiple acres in Pioneertown, 20 miles northwest of Joshua Tree. Here you will meet your host Emmanuel and have time to explore his animal sanctuary which includes goats, peacocks, a turkey, pig, horse, burro and some very friendly dogs. The farm is surrounded by BLM land as far as the eye can see. Each hike is approximately 3 miles long and takes place on dirt roads and trails. Emmanuel customizes the hike to the ability of the group participating.

A Magical Experience
I stumbled upon the “Let’s Goat Hike” when I was looking for something unique to do for my birthday a few years ago. With 4.99 out of 5 stars on Airbnb, I figured it was worth a shot. It is hard to convey how magical the experience is, but I can tell you that everyone I hiked with felt the same way. The surroundings are absolutely beautiful, the goats are curious and playful, and Emmanuel is wonderful.

The hike that day was easy to moderate and included some boulder hopping. Breaks are taken on the large granite rocks overlooking the vast desert. The goats happily run in front of you while walking, but settle down for pets and scratches during time outs. The views are spectacular.
Emmanuel is also well versed on the local desert fauna and points out edible plants as well as endangered species. The conversation is easy and the afternoon floats by.
I enjoyed a second hike last year, and the experience was just as amazing. Emmanuel offered fresh brewed tea and goat’s milk at the conclusion of the hike. I even purchased some homemade goat cheese.
If you love animals, this is the experience for you. You will not be disappointed.
What to Know to Not Stress Before You Go
Do not follow GPS to get to the Yogi Farm and Retreat! Once the adventure is booked, Emmanuel will email you directions to the farm. Take a screenshot of the directions as cell service is spotty in the area. Follow the blue arrows as directed. They will take you where you need to go.
You will travel on dirt roads to get to the farm. They are well maintained and most cars will have no problem.
Children 8 years and up are welcome to participate.
Groups are kept to a maximum of 20 people.
It is recommended to wear long pants and sturdy shoes. Bring sunscreen, a hat and water. Dress in layers.
You may cancel 7 days prior to the hike for a full refund.
Dogs are allowed with approval.
