When it comes to Sydney Beaches, they’re as much a part of the city’s identity as the Opera House or Harbour Bridge. I knew I couldn’t visit without feeling the sand between my toes at a couple of its most famous stretches. During my trip, I made it to two of Sydney’s best-loved beaches — Manly and Bondi — and I got to both without ever needing a rental car. Sydney’s public transportation made it ridiculously easy, affordable, and even scenic.

Getting to Manly: A Relaxed Sydney Beaches Ferry Ride
Manly Beach isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that starts the moment you board the ferry from Circular Quay. And in my case, it started within hours of landing in Sydney. I had just arrived in the city and decided Manly would be my very first adventure. I had no idea where I was going, so I simply followed the signs to the ferry terminal, tapped my credit card, and stepped on board.
The ferries are clearly marked with their destinations, so even jet-lagged travelers can’t go wrong. That short ride alone is worth the trip. The ferry glides past the Sydney Opera House and under the gaze of the Harbour Bridge, giving you postcard-worthy views from the water. About 30 minutes later, we pulled into Manly Wharf.
From there, a pedestrian mall lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants leads you straight to the beach. Food options are plentiful. Find everything from casual fish and chips to fresh seafood, Asian fusion, and bakeries. I opted for a late lunch at Alice Dumpling Bar, where the dumplings were fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I needed to recharge.
Afterward, I wandered toward the beach and spotted something that instantly made me feel at home — a Starbucks. In Australia, I had already discovered that ice in drinks and unsweetened iced tea are very much American quirks. Finding a Starbucks in Manly meant I could enjoy a tall, unsweetened iced tea while sitting on the promenade and watching surfers ride the waves.
The beach itself is long, clean, and framed by Norfolk pine trees. The vibe at this Sydney beach is relaxed but lively, with locals and tourists enjoying the sun, surfers catching waves, and families playing in the sand.

Getting to Bondi by Train and Bus
Bondi Beach is just as easy to reach, but the journey is a little different. I took the train from the city to Bondi Junction, then hopped on a bus down to the beach. Again, it was as simple as tapping my credit card to pay, but make sure to remember to tap again when you arrive so you’re not charged for the entire day.
Bondi has a big, open feel with golden sand, rolling waves, and a grassy park that stretches above the beach. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic or just lounging while you watch the surf. Like Manly, Bondi’s beachfront is full of shops and eateries, from casual fish-and-chip spots to trendy brunch cafes. This is one of those Sydney Beaches that has a constant buzz of energy and activity.

The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
One of the highlights of my Bondi visit was starting the Bondi to Coogee Walk. I didn’t have time to do the entire 6-kilometer trail, but I made it to the first beach along the walk, Tamarama, at a leisurely pace. Along the way, I stopped often at scenic points to take photos of the dramatic cliffs, turquoise water, and hidden coves.
Tamarama turned out to be a perfect stopping point. I found a small snack shack overlooking the beach and treated myself to a healthy shake while watching waves crash into the shore. The combination of ocean air, sunshine, and a cool drink made me wish I had more time to continue the walk.

Bondi Icebergs: An Icon Among Sydney Beaches
No visit to Bondi is complete without checking out Bondi Icebergs, the famous ocean pool that seems to spill right into the sea. The bright blue lanes contrast beautifully against the deep ocean waves, and sometimes those waves crash right over the edge of the pool.
I hadn’t brought a bathing suit, but I seriously considered buying one just to swim there. Entry was a nominal fee, and the facility had food, drinks, and plenty of space to relax. Whether you go for a swim, have lunch on the terrace, or simply take in the view, Bondi Icebergs is one of the most memorable spots among all Sydney Beaches.
Manly or Bondi — Which Should You Choose?
If you have the time, visit both. Manly feels a little more relaxed and is a great excuse to enjoy a ferry ride across Sydney Harbour. Bondi is iconic, energetic, and home to some of Sydney’s most photographed spots, including the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk. Thanks to Sydney’s efficient public transportation, you can enjoy these incredible Sydney Beaches without the stress of driving or parking. Whether you’re after a laid-back coastal vibe or a lively surf scene, Manly and Bondi prove that Sydney’s shoreline has something for everyone.
